Which is tougher, field hockey or ice hockey?
Jul, 30 2023Unleashing The Sporting Spirit: Field Hockey Vs Ice Hockey
I am situated in the land engulfed with sun, sand, and outdoor sports; yes you guessed it right - I am from good old Aussie land, Perth to be precise. And when it comes to sports, then the choices are as diverse and unique as the wonderful location that I am fortunate enough to call home. But today, I want to dive a little deeper into two sports that have kept many entertained and in awe, and yes, they also happen to be personal favorites: field hockey and ice hockey. So, are you ready to join me on this exciting journey of sporting exploration?
Hockey Schmockey: Tracing The Roots
When you hear hockey, some of you might immediately envision a green field with players sprinting, while the others like my little wonder, Ambrose might visualize a chilly ice rink with athletes gliding. Don’t blame the chap, he's been a tad obsessed with 'Frozen' lately. So, there's a clear indication that the first major difference comes from the backgrounds these sports originated from. Field hockey is one of the oldest team sports that is still played worldwide. Whereas ice hockey traces its roots back to the colder climes of Canada. Consider it the beauty and the beast of sports, beautiful in their difference, yet beastly in their intensity.
All in the Game: Field Hockey Action
Imagine a beaming sun above, a spanking clean astroturf beneath, and eleven determined players on each team holding sticks trying to propel a small hard ball into the opponent's goal. That's field hockey for you. The ground-based sport is quite popular around the globe, with the pace determined by the player’s running, dodging, and quick passes. It's a game where agility meets finesse, and power crosses paths with precision.
Sliding with the Puck: The Thrill of Ice Hockey
Now slip onto a sheet of ice, arm yourself with a stick, and replace the hard ball with a puck. You’re swinging and gliding, all in a bid to outskill, outpace, and outscore the opposing team - welcome to the cool world of ice hockey. It's an adrenaline-pumping game, where players zoom across an icy surface, maneuvering the puck with their stick, while skillfully employing their bodywork to engage and evade opponents. It's less about road running and more about precision sliding, which if you ask me, has a certain poetic functionality about it.
The Gear Down Low: Equipment and Protection
In terms of the gear, both sports demand their own unique sets. Field hockey requires shin guards, mouthguards, shoes with a good grip, and of course, the cherry on top - the field hockey stick. Ice hockey on the other hand makes you resemble a human tank. Helmet with a cage or shield, thick gloves, shoulder, shin, and elbow pads, skate boots and add to that the ice hockey stick - the gear list goes on! Of course, you need them considering the ice rink resembles a gladiator’s arena at times. "Better safe than sorry" has never been truer.
A Piece of Tough Love: Sticking to the Rules
Now, let’s put on our glasses and dive into some rules. In field hockey, the play is made with the flat side of the stick and not the rounded side. The ball isn't allowed to hit your body, and there's no thwacking the stick of an opponent (unless you want to be in the penalty corner). Ice hockey rules, on the other hand, have offsides and icing calls, and yes, body checking is allowed, making it a sport where brawn meets brain.
Shooting the Breeze: What’s Tougher?
The big question has finally arrived - which is tougher: field hockey or ice hockey? The answer depends on how we define 'tough'. Now if we're talking physical toughness, then ice hockey wins by a long shot. Why, you ask? Imagine balancing on ice skates while trying to control a hard rubber puck, maneuvering through your opponents trying to slam you into the boards. That's some serious toughness on display, isn't it?
But let’s not forget field hockey - the sun can beam down scorchingly and the non-stop running, the continuous change in direction, applying swift, smart tactics - all these require a solid level of physical stamina and a meticulous amount of mental toughness. It's not for the faint-hearted, I assure you. At one point, I tried my hand at it (or rather my legs), and let me tell you, it is no picnic. I ended up gasping for breath like a little goldfish out of its bowl.
So both sports have their own set of unique challenges. Calling one tougher than the other would be rather unfair. It's like comparing the toughness of an ice cream in summer to a teapot in a tempest. Both will lose their cool in their unique ways. So, whether you favor the icy thrill of the rink or the fast-paced turf, both field hockey and ice hockey will continue to entertain, engage, and challenge us in their wonderfully unique manners.
In the end, it's all about what gets your adrenaline rushing. Whether it's sprinting across a turf with a hockey stick or gliding on an icy surface, each presents its challenges, making them equally deserving of admiration and respect. So, choose your game, gear up, and let your passion guide you on the field, or perhaps onto the rink!
